Mahua: A Deep Dive Into India's Traditional Drink
2026-01-29
The Indian summer presents extreme heat conditions in 2026, while its Strong Beer market has transformed into a drinking practice beyond cheaper alcohol consumption.
People today need to stop drinking Haywards 5000 because of its glycerine content and Kingfisher Strong because of its carbonation.
The orange-and-gold cans, which you see occupying main display space at premium liquor stores, become visible to customers who enter these establishments in Gurgaon, Mumbai, or Bangalore.
The situation causes misunderstandings. The beer exists as a light beer or a strong beer. The two products, "Amstel Grande" and "Amstel International Strong" exist as separate entities.
The question requires resolution: Does Amstel Grande provide better value than Budweiser Magnum because of its higher cost?

Before we talk about money, you need to know what you are buying.
Unlike in Europe, where Amstel is famous for its light lager, in India, United Breweries (the makers of Kingfisher) has positioned Amstel squarely in the premium strong category.
There are currently two main players you will find on shelves:

We tasted the Amstel Grande (650ml bottle) to see if the slow brewed tag actually makes a difference or if it’s just an excuse to charge ₹50 more.
Pour a deep golden amber. The head (foam) is thick and creamy, much better than the fizzy, disappearing foam of standard strong beers. It looks premium in a glass.
Usually, strong beers smell like "booze" or corn syrup. Amstel Grande is surprisingly malty. You get notes of toasted grain and a little bit of floral hop. It doesn't sting the nose.

Amstel Beer vs Popular Strong Beers in India
| Comparison | The Fight | Alcohol % | Price Difference | Taste & Drinking Experience |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Amstel Grande vs Budweiser Magnum | Premium strong beer showdown | Both ~8% ABV (Magnum varies 6.5–8%, Grande is consistently 8%) | Similar pricing in most states | Budweiser Magnum: Sweeter, heavier body, rice-based adjuncts. Amstel Grande: Maltier, crisper, cleaner finish |
| Amstel International Strong vs Tuborg Strong | Budget strong beer battle | Both around 8% ABV | Tuborg cheaper by ₹10–₹20 | Tuborg Strong: Fruitier, sweeter, easy-drinking. Amstel: More malt depth, stronger “real beer” character |
| Amstel vs Kingfisher Strong | Newcomer vs Indian legend | Both ~8% ABV | Kingfisher much cheaper (₹140 vs ₹190 for 650ml) | Kingfisher Strong: Highly fizzy, sharp alcoholic bite. Amstel: Smoother, more refined, less harsh |
The statement "I'm drinking strong beer but I'm watching my weight" contains an oxymoron which we will investigate through data analysis.
The 500ml can of Amstel Strong beer contains between 220 and 240 calories because its residual sugar and higher alcohol content push it above the light beer limit of 140 calories.
Amstel Grande markets itself as having no added sugar.
This is a huge plus. Many cheaper strong beers add sugar or jaggery to boost alcohol during fermentation which causes bad hangovers.
Amstel achieves its 8% ABV through malt fermentation which is cleaner.
The product contains Water Malt Barley Malted Glucose Syrup (which appears in some versions) Hops and Yeast as its components.
Amstel has played a smart game in India. They realized that selling light beer to Indians is a losing battle. We want value, and in India, value = Strength + Taste.
Amstel Grande bridges the gap perfectly.
It gives you the 8% kick that the Indian market demands but packages it in a liquid that tastes like a European lager rather than a chemical cocktail.
